The Old Sawmills, Eardisley
Flood Risk Assessment

HLS were commissioned to undertake a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA), informed by hydraulic modelling, to assist in the planning application to convert rural land to residential use. The site is drained by Mill Brook, which contains standing water for much of each year but had caused flooding in July 2007.

Fishtek Consulting, 2014
Installation of fish passes, River Don

In December 2014, HLS was appointed by Fishtek Consulting to undertake FRAs for the installation of fish passes at Brightside and Steelbank weirs on the River Don, Sheffield. Glanrhos Estate, Powys
Flood Consequence Assessment for a proposed touring caravan and camp site

Glanrhos Estate sought to develop a field overlooking the River Wye as a touring caravan site. Natural Resources Wales needed assurance that the site lies beyond the limit of flooding and that escape routes would allow safe evacuation. HLS were commissioned to undertake a Level 3 FCA report.

Hanson Aggregates
Flood Risk Assessments in England

HLS has undertaken numerous FRAs for Hanson Aggregates, who use Dr Paul Webster, based at our Mortimer office, to advise on flooding and hydrology of proposed mineral extraction sites. Projects include the extension of quarry operations, infilling of lakes, and the assessment of discharge from sites. Work has included site visits and survey, consultation with the Environment Agency, and detailed analysis of proposed changes on all aspects of flood risk.

Lower Hengoed Farm, Huntington
Flood Risk Assessment for proposed polytunnels for cherry trees

Successful cultivation of cherries in a high rainfall area requires control of the water supply during the fruiting season and polytunnels had been proposed at this Herefordshire farm, near to the Welsh border. Polytunnels can increase flood risk downstream and an FRA needs to show that runoff will not be increased by the development. HLS were commissioned to produce a surface water management plan, as part of a FRA.

The Radnor Arms, Llowes
Flood Consequence Assessment for a proposed camp site

As part of their development plans, The Radnor Arms sought to develop an adjacent field as a commercial camp site. The development site abuts a small tributary of the River Wye for which there was a record of flooding. HLS were commissioned to undertake a Level 1 scoping study and subsequently to produce a Level 3 Flood Consequence Assessment (FCA) report, in support of a Planning Application.

Weller Designs, Golf Course Architects
Flood Risk Assessments in Southern England

HLS is retained by Weller Designs to undertake FRAs for golf courses. Proposals have included new courses, remodelling of existing courses, and construction of reservoirs and attenuation basins.
