Hydro-Logic Services Help Deliver Steart Coastal Management Project

12/09/2014

Hydro-Logic Services are pleased to have been part of a substantial project on the Steart peninsula, Somerset. The scheme returned over 400ha to wetland habitat including saltmarsh and intertidal wetlands and also provided valuable flooding defence for the village of Steart and key roads in the area.

The site is one of the largest coastal realignment schemes and has been managed by CH2M Hill. HLS were involved in the early stage of the project undertaking rainfall and flow measurement to assess freshwater inputs and water movement through the site. A series of spot flow gauging sites were monitored along with a continuous flow monitoring solution at a key location within the site. Continuous monitoring consisted of a bed mounted Doppler device for which a velocity index rating was developed across a full range of flow conditions. In addition, a tipping bucket rain gauge provided a feed of data for comparison with flows. The remote system was powered on a small solar panel and lithium batteries and data was available on the Timeview Telemetry website for remote monitoring and to target calibration visits.
